Adjustments to Ballot Measures

Background

The Political Reform Division publishes total contributions received by ballot measure committees to support or oppose each ballot measure. The summaries in Power Search do not always match the totals from the Political Reform Division.

Why are the numbers different?

Power Search collects and analyzes raw contributions data from Cal-Access. Political Reform Division analysts can provide insight into situations that simple tabulation will miss. Some examples include:

Support Across Election Cyles - Power Search bases its calculations of total contributions for each measure on election cycles. Some ballot measure committees receive contributions over more than one election cycle, however. The PRD analysis accounts for contributions in election cycles before the proposition was placed on the ballot.
Changes to Committee Formation - Sometimes a committee changes its status to become a ballot measure committee supporting or opposing a measure placed on the ballot in the middle of an election cycle. Power Search is not aware of the date for this transition. Power Search numbers will, therefore, include all contributions received by the committee since the beginning of the election cycle. The PRD analysis accounts for money that such a committee has in its beginning balance and contributions received after the date when the committee changed its status to become a ballot measure committee supporting or opposing a measure on the ballot.
Filing Errors - Power Search can only use the data it sees in the filings. If the filing itself is incorrect, Power Search will include that incorrect data until an amendment is filed by the committee. PRD analysis can sometimes detect these reporting errors and make adjustments.

Update frequency

The numbers in Power Search are updated daily with the latest published filings in Cal-Access. Detailed analysis from the Political Reform Division is more labor intensive, and may take more time to publish.

This table provides adjustments that you can apply to get the most up-to-date information about contributions received by committees supporting and opposing ballot measures on the November 3, 2020 ballot. Please keep in mind that these contribution totals may be updated based on filings reviewed by the Political Reform Division. To find the latest total for contributions received to support or oppose a ballot measure, find the proposition in the table below. For total contributions in support of a ballot measure, add or subtract the amount in the "Adjustment to Total Contributions in Support" column to the amount reported by Power Search. For total contributions in opposition to a ballot measure, add or subtract the amount in the "Adjustment to Total Contributions in Opposition" column to the number reported by Power Search. If the column includes a -$0- dollar amount, no adjustment is necessary to the number reported by Power Search.
